NORMAL, Ill. – Missouri State’s Katie Palmer scored the go-ahead basket with 58.7 seconds to play and Tyonna Snow added four points in the final minute Monday night as the Lady Bears (8-10, 3-4 Missouri Valley Conference) grabbed a 75-72 win over Illinois State (4-13, 3-4) inside Redbird Arena.
After the Redbirds had overcome a 48-36 second-half deficit to lead 70-69, Palmer swung the lead back in MSU’s favor with a layup just after the clock got under a minute. Tyonna Snow then nabbed a steal and turned it into two free throws with 47.3 seconds left for a 73-70 advantage and hit a driving jumper with 11.2 ticks remaining to secure the win. Illinois State’s heave at the buzzer missed the iron.
A close first half saw seven lead changes in the first nine minutes before Kenzie Williams hit two free throws and Bry Snow converted a 3-point play with 6:42 remaining for a 24-19 MSU lead, the largest for either team to that point.
Palmer hit back-to-back jumpers to make it 30-23 Missouri State with 3:54 to play, and Tyonna Snow’s jumper with 35 seconds left regained that seven-point advantage after the Redbirds closed to 30-28.
Missouri State shot 56 percent in the period and both teams committed 13 turnovers, though ISU held an 18-6 margin in points off those miscues.
The Redbirds made it a one-possession game twice in the first two minutes of the second half before the Lady Bears rattled off a 9-0 run that included two layups from Tyonna Snow and a long 3-pointer from Hannah Wilkerson to lead 48-36 with 15:35 left in the game.
It took the Lady Bears exactly five minutes to score again after that as ISU pulled within four points before Tyonna Snow’s driving layup made it 50-44 with 10:35 remaining.
MSU held its lead between four and nine points until 4:45 remained when Illinois State’s Chloe Nelson poured in nine points over the next 91 seconds to hand the Redbirds a 68-67 lead with 3:14 on the clock.
Nelson added two more free throws with 2:46 to go to cap ISU’s 9-0 run with a 70-67 score before Palmer’s two free throws made it 70-69 with 1:39 to play.
Tyonna Snow led the MSU scoring with 14 points while Williams added 13, Bry Snow had 11 and Palmer had 10. Hughes scored nine points on 3-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc. Nelson netted 25 points for the Redbirds.
The Lady Bears shot 51.9 percent (28-54) for the game to overcome 24 turnovers that resulted in 31 ISU points. MSU shot 14-for-17 from the foul line, 5-for-10 on 3-pointers and held a 35-26 rebounding edge.
