(West Plains) – The Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzly Basketball team got back on the winning track Tuesday night, Nov. 12, with a 72-62 victory over John Wood Community College, Quincy, Ill., in Joe Paul Evans Arena at the West Plains Civic Center.

“We beat a very scrappy team that will get better as the year goes on,” Grizzly Basketball Head Coach Yancey Walker said of his team’s win.

The Grizzlies took a 38-30 advantage into halftime, but only outscored John Wood 34-32 in the second period. “We have got to develop our finishers mentality,” Walker said. “We had a chance to put them completely away, but we didn’t.”

Leading scorers for the Grizzlies were freshman guards Jameel Moore with 14 points, freshman forward Justin Jamison and freshman guard Jeremiah Jackson, each with 12 points, and redshirt freshman forward Ed Seay, Jr., 11.

“After our last game, we said we needed to get the big guys more involved offensively. We did that, and they responded by shooting almost 59 percent from the floor,” Walker said.

The Grizzlies also had 14 offensive rebounds, 14 assists on 26 baskets, and eight turnovers.

John Wood was led in scoring by TJ Tisdell with 25 points, followed by Jordan Johnson with 13 and Galat Toang 10.

“We were a lot better defensively guarding sets than we have been recently,” Walker said. “We didn’t lose guys on the perimeter for open shots, and consequently, they shot 27 percent from the three. We still allowed too many easy post touches. Once we get that taken care of, we should be able to hold teams down defensively.”

Walker said he would like to thank the West Plains Civic Center for sponsoring the game. “We appreciate all that they do for us,” he said.

Tuesday night’s game completes a four-game home stand that opened the Grizzlies’ season. The team will hit the road for the first time this week to compete in the Hampton Inn-Holiday Inn Reiver Classic Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15 and 16, at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs.

They will play Marshalltown (Iowa) Community College at 4:30 p.m. Friday and the hosting Reivers, ranked eighth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I men’s preseason poll, at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The Grizzlies will return home next week for a 7 p.m. contest Tuesday, Nov. 19, against Labette Community College from Parsons, Kan. The game once again will be sponsored by the civic center.
