Avis Juanita (Wright) Howery was born August 29, 1920 in Rover, Missouri, the daughter of John and Amy (Naney) Wright. She passed away November 27, 2013 at Mountain View Healthcare in Mountain View, Missouri at the age of 93.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date at the Mountain View United Methodist Church under the direction of Yarber Mortuary, Mountain View. Following the service a reception will be held for family and friends. Memorials may be made to the Mountain View United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Aransas Pass, Texas. Her memories of her childhood were of happy, fun-loving friends, and she especially enjoyed her schoolmates. After graduation from Thomasville High School she attended Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, Missouri to become a teacher. She also attended Southwest Missouri State Teachers College in Springfield, Missouri and received her degree in elementary education from Kingsville A&I College in 1950. In 1963, she received her Masters Degree in Education. Her first teaching job was teaching first and second grade at Thomasville. She was a teacher in the Couch and Thayer school districts until she met her future husband and moved to Aransas Pass, Texas where she continued to teach in the Aransas Pass school system until her retirement in 1973.

Avis was married on April 27, 1945 to Robert Howery, who preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her parents, John and Amy Wright; three sisters, Meekee Schroeder, Gertrude Moore, and Ellen Smoot.

Avis enjoyed travel, church and community work. Her favorite travel was a trip she took to the Holy Land. She was an adult sunday School teacher for 64 years and a member of the choir. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and held various offices in her local church and the United Methodist Women’s organization.

In March of 2001, Avis moved from Texas to Willow West Apartments in Willow Springs, Missouri, to be near her niece, Sue Pennycuick. In 2006 she moved to the Assisted Living facility at Mountain View, MIssouri and has been a resident of the Mountain View Nursing facility for the past two years.

Avis is survived by her family and friends in Aransas Pass, Texas; her niece, Sue Pennycuick Johnson of Ft. Smith, Arkansas; her nephew Jack Smoot and wife, LaWanda in St. James, Missouri; and friends in Mountain View, MO.
