Jewell Maxine (Peebles) Farley, 96, of Houston, MO, passed away Monday February 20, 2012 at Autumn Oaks Caring Center in Mtn. Grove, MO due to an extended illness.

Jewell was born May 16, 1915 near Mtn. Grove, MO to James Blain and Ethel (Greenwood) Peebles. She was third born having three sisters, Ruth, Theda and Margaret, and a baby brother James or “Junior”. The family spent most of its years on the farm at Dunn, MO. They attended Greenwood Baptist Church where Jewell learned about God’s love. She attended and graduated from Mtn. Grove High school. In August 1935, Jewell met the love of her life, Leland Jennings Farley of Houston, described as an “industrious business man and farmer”. The couple was married on December 17, 1938, much to the surprise of those who regarded Leland as a full fledged bachelor. They lived on the Womack farm west of Houston a few years, and then moved to their stately home on Hawthorn Street in Houston in 1941. There they spent over forty happy years of marriage, Leland employed by Intercounty Electric and Jewell a creative and talented homemaker. Though they did not have children, Leland and Jewell were very fond of their nieces and enjoyed having Carol and Marilyn come visit each summer. Jewell would sew beautiful Barbie doll clothes and make elaborate doll furniture for “her girls”. She spent hours in the kitchen with them, teaching them how to cook and bake pumpkin pie and angel food cake being her specialties. Jewell had a keen sense of humor and would tease her nieces about “her little orphan children who lived upstairs,” creating even more intrigue and desire to go upstairs and explore.

Leland and Jewell were longtime members of United Methodist Church of Houston, and enjoyed many friends throughout their years who will remember and miss them.

Jewell is survived by a sister-in-law, Ruth Peebles of Mtn. Home, AR, a niece, Marilyn (Kerry) Lawson of Thatcher, AZ, a great niece, Maranda Rimes of Memphis, TN, great nephews, Aaron (Sarah) Ellis of Houston, MO, Jonathan (Cassandra) Lawson of Nashville, TN and Jordan Lawson of Nashville, TN, and great great- nephew, Zane Rimes of Memphis, TN.

She is pre-deceased by her parents, James Blain and Ethel Peebles, her husband Leland J. Farley, three sisters; Ruth Holmes, Theda French and Margaret Doty, a brother, James K. Peebles and a niece, Carol Ellis.

Thank you to all family, friends and caregivers who touched Jewell’s life and were in turn touched by her. She will be sadly missed and held dear in our hearts. Jewell, ‘May your heart go on as our hearts will go on for you.”

The family respectfully requests that donations be made to the Houston United Methodist Church, in her honor, in lieu floral arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to www.evansfh.com.
