(Little Rock) (AP) – Gov. Mike Beebe has declared a state of emergency because of the ongoing drought, enabling Arkansas ranchers to transport hay bales on controlled highways, with a permit.

The governor’s office says some ranchers are seeing a shrinking feed supply. For the next 30 days, the state can issue special permits to transport round bales of hay on controlled highways. The bales cannot be more than 12 feet wide.

State highway officials will select which is the safest route for transporting hay.
