(Newport) – A jail escapee from Jackson County, AR has been killed during a police pursuit in Missouri.

39-year-old Steven Mitchell died Tuesday afternoon after crashing the vehicle he was driving into a tree while trying to elude police near Mountain View. A report from the Highway Patrol states that the vehicle caught fire with Mitchell trapped inside the vehicle.

Mountain View Police stopped the vehicle, which was driven by Mitchell’s wife, about noon Tuesday for speeding. When she was removed from the car due to a reported odor of intoxicants, Mitchell reportedly got behind the wheel and drove away. He was spotted still driving the vehicle about three hours later and crashed while again trying to elude officers.

The vehicle was later identified as having been stolen from Bald Knob, AR.

A second inmate who escaped with Mitchell early Monday, 22-year-old Steven Reed, was recaptured earlier in Independence County.

Authorities says Mitchell’s wife, Jessica Mitchell, is being held for helping in the escape.

Ozark Radio News broke the story Tuesday afternoon.
