(Jefferson City) (AP) – A top aide to Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon is undergoing additional tests following what the governor’s office describes as a mild stroke.

Nixon’s office said Monday that 53-year-old chief of staff John Watson was hospitalized over the weekend and is expected to make a full recovery.

Many of Watson’s duties during his absence will be handled by policy director Jeff Harris and deputy chief of staff Peter Lyskowski.

Watson has been the governor’s chief of staff since Nixon took office in 2009. He held the same post in the attorney general’s office under Nixon beginning in 1997. He first started working for Nixon in 1993 and handled criminal trials and appeals in the attorney general’s office.

Watson is from Kennett.
